With a running time that could extend from anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes, short films must introduce characters, establish their goals and obstacles and provide a satisfying finale to the story in the time it often takes to watch the previews before a feature presentation. Answering this list of questions will cover the key criteria for critiquing short films on their own merit.
Are the visuals, the audio and the storyline clear enough to express a complete idea to the audience? Is the total sum of all the parts in this short film confusing or underdeveloped?
Who is the protagonist and what does this individual or group want to achieve? Were the performances convincing or did they remind you that it is only a movie?
Was there a consistent aura, appearance and feeling to the short film that kept the story cohesive? Was there a sense of a particular genre or hybrid of genre elements in the storytelling?
Was the lighting even enough to not draw attention to itself? Was the story visually appealing?
Was the use of music, shot composition and scene sequence effective in telling the story and keeping you interested?

Each year short films are written, developed and put on display for all to judge. While each idea may be a creative side of a filmmaker that everyone cannot understand, the critics will still decide which films are the best, and which are the worst. Films are judged based on the story concept, dialogue and action in the film, the directing and other cinematic requirements: scenery, acting, setting, film budget, amongst others.
Sight and Bruce were some of the best short films of 2012, as of late. Sight was given the best short film of 2012 honor due to its polished and clever story, which some refer to as an “eight-minute work of art.Confused? Here
‘s a little help . †Sight deals with technology from the eyes of the main character. Bruce was a dark comedy animation, and audiences loved the cerebral take on multiple subjects within the short film. The camera movement was also applauded by critics. Bruce is the story of a man who creates his own miniature action hero.
Most people compete to be popular, but some writers thought it would be a good idea to make a film, First the Worst, the story about children competing to be the most unpopular amongst their peers. All ideas seem like good ideas, until those ideas are fully developed. The writers and directors of this film may not have been competing for the worst short film of 2012, but like the children in their film, they achieved that goal. Talk about irony!

When people head to the theaters to watch a film, their expectations for what they are about to view are always pretty high. No one walks into a theater thinking that the movie is going to be horrible. With such high expectations, though, there comes disappoint. It is no shock that not all movies end up meeting those expectations that have been set up for them. This results in the moviegoer becoming upset and feeling as if they have waster both their time and their money. Many short films are the culprits for movies that are considered to be disappointing. The whole story can be found at http://pwrcords.com/2012/07/26/the-punisher-is-doing-some-laundry/
Short films are meant to be appreciated in a different way than Hollywood blockbuster films are. These short films usually do not include a star studded cast, nor do they have a large budget that they are working from. The film needs to be viewed in that manner as well. Those watching the film should focus more so on the plot and story, rather than all the extra film accessories. In order to appreciate a short film, the individual must absorb the message that is being shared. If they place themselves in the movie, they will appreciate what is being told.

Making a short film is difficult especially if you are a beginner and you have no budget. People are misled by the idea that since it is a short film, it is easier to make. But sad to say, it can be even more complicated compared to make full length films because of the details you must emphasize. In ten minutes you must be able to show everything; that’s why good organization and filmmaking capabilities are vital. Then again, get your hopes up! Truth is, there are ways to make short film making possible even for an inexperienced person like you.
First, you need to create or find original and interesting scripts. It must be something that makes you motivated to do the film because you like the script content. Second, you need to choose your medium meticulously; be it high definition or digital video. The medium you use will have an effect on your film, so choose the good ones. Third, do away with archetypal kind of shots. Since this is a short film, be as creative as you can. Make it stand out.
Fourth, never ignore the importance of good sound and music to your film. Visual effects, no matter how perfect they are, won’t work without good audio. Fifth, as much as possible, make your short films SHORT. You do not need to consume the whole ten minutes. As long as you can tell the story in 3 or 5 minutes, then do so. Sixth, make sure that your credits are not time consuming. Don’t make them lengthier than the film itself.
Seventh, budget your film wisely. And lastly, promote your short film. After it is polished to excellence, show it to the world.

The world of cinema has long been a fickle place, from films that no one understands to blatantly obvious meanings, film is a diverse media that can scarcely be defined. That being said short film is an offset of typical film that is worth taking a closer look at. Short film has both advantages and disadvantages that are distinct to it in particular. With a short film you can keep the audience’s interest far easier than a long, dragging picture, you can also make each individual part of the film mean something which helps to make the whole piece more impactful, and you can also spend less time worry about budget and actor salary because they are engaged for a shorter amount of time.
All that being said there are also some disadvantages. First off you have to make everything have meaning because you have far less time to make your point. You also have to make it incredibly poignant because you do not have as much time to build a relationship with your audience which gives you less time to breed emotion. Lastly, you have to make it easy to understand and comprehend because you do not have as much time to bring your audience to the conclusion that you want.

Porter (1869-1941) directed the first American documentary, the six minute film “Life of an American Fireman†and the notable 11 minute movie “The Great Train Robbery†along with over 100 others. William K.L. Dickson (1860-1935) directed 155 short films before releasing the reins and focusing on managing the company Biograph, known as America’s first movie studio. All directors owe their careers to the first short film director Louis Lumière (1864-1948) who directed 99 short films. He is also widely known as the pioneer of art of cinematography.
